Betway and SWAG Hold Sensitization Confab for Sports Journalists

A leading sports betting company in Ghana, Betway, has teamed up with the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) to hold an educational Seminar for Sports Journalists yesterday Friday 7 February, 2020 at the Alisa Swiss Spirit Hotel, in Accra. Over 80 sports Journalists, drawn from the Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern regions, attended the conference.

The main speakers for the event included Maurice Quansah of Graphic Communications Group, who is also Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Michael Oti Adjei of TV3 and Prosper Harrison Addo, General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) who is also a trained journalist and lawyer. Others were Gary Al Smith of the Multimedia Group, Ben Willie Graham of GTV and Akosua Addai Amoo, an AIPS Young Reporter. There were also Godfred Akoto of Citi News, Elleony Amande, CEO of Karela FC, Nathaniel Attoh and Sammy Heywood Okine.


Participants were schooled on some ethics and etiquette of the profession, how to report accurately and fairly, digital reporting and making positive usage of the social media.

In his submission, Mr. Mike Oti Adjei said the media are influencers of society and must, hence, always act professionally and endeavor to be on top of issues by being enlightened and building relationships.

On his part, Maurice Quansah admonished sports journalists, especially the younger ones, to make it a point to dress decently all the time, while encouraging them to seek opportunities in education to develop and enhance their career.

Adding his voice to the call, ace sports journalist, Nathaniel Attoh, was of the view that journalists must be presentable and work hard to build their image and reputation.

Other speakers variously admonished young sports journalists on the need to cultivate a healthy habit for extensive research and to be cautious in their reportage to avoid defamation.

Participants were schooled on such sensitive issues as the use of social media within the media space, branding, the need for collaborations as well as capacity-building. There was also special emphasis on the digitization of the profession and its significance towards the promotion of sports on both the local and international fronts.

The educational seminar was the second in the series after the first edition at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi in the Ashanti region, on Wednesday 5 February, 2020.

At the end of the event, participants received certificates of participation and other complimentary gifts from Betway and SWAG.
