Cote d’Ivoire thrashed Ghana 5-0 in the first Group A clash of the 2016 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations at the Eko Atlantic Beach in Lagos, Nigeria.
A head injury to first choice keeper Adjei Sowah forced him out of the game after 10 minutes with the scores at 0-0.
The Ivorians seized the initiative with two goals in five minutes through Aka and Djimi to lead the first session 2-0.Disaster struck the Ghanaians as replacement keeper Dan Goka collided with an opponent and complained of dizziness but with the first choice keeper out, he continued.
The Ivorians dominated the clash from the start as they went in search of the first goal in the first period, but were denied by poor finishing. But in the last seconds of the first period, Cote d’Ivoire eventually found the breakthrough, scoring two quick goals to end the period 2-0. In the second period, the Ghanians tried to get back into the game but couldn’t go past a resolute Cote d’Ivoire defence.
Cote d’Ivoire scored their third goal. And in the final period, Cote d’Ivoire added two more goals to end the tie 5-0.
Beach Soccer Ghana President Yaw Ampofo Ankrah spoke after the match and said that even though the injuries changed the course of the game, the better team won on the day so there can be no excuses.
Next up for Ghana is a deciding encounter against Egypt who lost 3-2 to hosts Nigeria.
In the other group encounter, Egypt battled from two goals down to make it 2-2 but lost 3-2 in dramatic fashion to bring a thrilling end to day one.
