Hijacking our son’s funeral arrangements/corpse offends our customs – Agbotui and Allied families to Prez Akufo Addo

The Agbotui, Tamakloe and Allied Families, family of late former President Jerry John Rawlings, have registered their displeasure over what they say is the inappropriate meddling in the funeral arrangements and final funeral rites of the late statesman by government.

In a statement to the president issued through their solicitors, Vordoagu, Dzeble & Co., dated Thursday December 4, 2020 the family bemoaned the government’s lack of proper consultation of and or engagement with them on planning of the funeral and the subsequent announcement of same to the public.

“The said families dissociate themselves from an earlier communication on the letterhead of the late former President announcing to the general public the 23rd December 2020 as the date fixed for the final funeral rites and interment of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings. The said communication is not only inappropriate but also lacks the requisite imprimature of the immediate customary family as well as that of the larger family herein before stated” the statement indicates adding “The named families hereby reiterate that the dead body of their son belonged to the Victoria Agbotui family which is the immediate customary family headed by Elisabeth Dangonkie Kodjie who is the only surviving sister of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.”

The statememt is further asking the president to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a meeting between the customary family and government in order to find some common grounds.

“As a result of the foregoing, we are instructed to convey to you, Sir, a most respectful request for a meeting with your outfit to to iron out these outstanding matters of grave concern within a week from today,” the statement reads.
