As one of the oldest towns in the Volta Region of Ghana, Keta is set to have a new sports stadium.
The town which was the first regional capital of the Volta Region has over twenty-three thousand population.
Some parts of the town were devastated by sea erosion between the 1960s and 1980s affecting then Keta Landon Park which used to host sporting activities in the Region.
According to Chief of the Town, Torgbui Gobah Tengey, the Municipal Assembly has already secured land in Keta for the construction of an Astra Turf Sports Stadium.
“Yes, It’s true Keta will get a new stadium, about six months ago I wrote a letter to a friend of mine about Keta Landon park that had been destroyed by sea erosion 48 years ago and he has accepted to help us construct a new one”
“I quickly organized a meeting with the MCE for Keta, Hon Godwin Edudzi Effah, Torgbui James Ocloo V, chief of Keta, Mama Tokormi, the Queen mother of Keta and Divine Kwadzo Dzokoto alias Kwadzo Baba in my palace in order to meet the philanthropist one on one for the construction of the stadium”, Torbui Gobah Tengey said.
He maintained that the sod cutting and construction work was expected to begin three months ago but has been delayed due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“..and we were able to meet the philanthropist at his residence to have his assurance but due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, we haven’t done the sod cutting and to start the construction works”
The Stadium will be constructed close to the Keta Midwifery and Nursing Training College in the Keta Municipality and is expected to have a handball, basketball and a tennis court.
