Mawuli Snr High School Knocked Out Of Sprite Basketball Tourney 2019

Mawuli Senior High school have been knocked out of the Sprite Basketball competition in Accra. The sole female representative of the Volta Region at the tournament were bullied in their opener against defending champions Kumasi Senior High school 39 – 6.

A game that saw fierce competition and lots of physical battle for the ball. Despite the game’s toughness, Mawuli school were completely outclassed.

The team came back as a rejuvenated side and in their quest to find victory in their second game also landed in another heavy defeat as they loss to the West African Senior High school (WASS) 33 – 6.

Mr. Phillip Bansah who doubles as a trainer and P. E teacher of the school attributed their defeat to lack of proper preparation and also lack of experience on the part his players. Speaking with the Sports department of Volta 1 TV/ Global 105.1 FM, He explain that “our girls did their best but we just didn’t get through due to lack of adequate training and this is the first time the team has qualified to play in such tournament, we lacked experience as well”. The defeat has churned out a very low morale in camp amongst the players.

The basketball Regional coach Mr. Charles Gomadonkui who was part of the team also reiterated to the fact that they never had ample time to train since it was during the vacation.

“In fact the girls are raw talents and we had only two weeks to work with them and they have really tried, if we had enough time for preparations, we would have gone far” he added.

He was optimistic of a brighter future for the team “if we work on these girls, they will definitely be fully groomed and ready for bigger tournaments, they just need more training and mentorship”.

Captain of the team Priscilla Akwensivie assured her team mates of a consolation in their last game. She added that “we will try as much as possible to do our best and certainly determination should earn us victory”.

Priscilla Ayittey , who was very instrumental in the two games believes they were not fully prepared. According to her “we were not fully prepared due to the time frame, we trained for only two weeks whereas other teams had ample time, we will try our best next time” . They are billed to play for honors and pride against another tough side Mfatseman Senior High School in their last game.
