University lecturers admonish EC against new voters’ register

A group calling itself Concerned University Lectures have joined the numerous calls against the compilation of a new voters’ register ahead of the December 2020 general elections. In an open letter signed by about 101 lecturers across various public and private universities in the country, and addressed to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensah; the group has raised several concerns on the Electoral Commission’s decision to go ahead with the compilation of a new voters’ roll.

They are, for example, worried about the timing of the exercise, which time they think will ultimately work against the overall electoral timetable. They have therefore suggested to the EC to reconsider their decision.

We are particularly worried about the decision to compile a completely new voters’ register given that our country’s constitutionally scheduled presidential and parliamentary elections are about six months away,” the statement reads.
