Volta Cricket Clinic Ends on a Good Note

A Coaching clinic organized by the Volta Regional Cricket Association, through the support of the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) was successfully held at the OLA SHS Park in Ho.
The two day program which begun on Friday, May 19 saw over 60 JHS pupils from 6 selected schools within the municipality.
The participants were taken through the various skills in the game of Cricket to enhance their interest and improve their efficiency. 7 level one Coaches and other trainers took the enthusiastic boys and girls through High and Low Catch, retrieving the ball from boundary, accurate passes Wicket keeping and batting. Other skills learnt were correct grip of the bat, blocking, various shots, bowling and running between the wickets.
The presence of the CEO of the GCA, Henry Benjamin Ackom was a plus to the success of the program as he has been an inspiration to the coaches and trainers as well. The Regional Chairman, B. B Dotse was also present at the program.

Secretary of the Volta Regional Cricket Association, Victor Tetteh in an interview with Global FM Sports says they have touched on all areas believing they can replicate it in any match.

“It has been very successful, thanks to colleagues who supported. Well initially we thought we had to do more work on their bowling, batting, with their runs, because sometimes they run into each other. We can also talk of their fielding and retrieving of balls. We have worked on all these areas. Now we feel that this time round they are good and they are capable of taking charge of any opponent at any time and we are proud of them.”
Victor who teaches Physical Education at OLA also says they have identified some talents to form regional U-17 teams for both sexes.
“We have selected 20 boys and girls each and allocated a coach for them. He will be handling them on regular basis and report to the Regional Chairman, Mr B.B Dotse. If there are some challenges, we will see how best to solve them. These are just to keep them active and prepare them for any competition that will come our way.”
Volta will be hosting Eastern Region at Ho for a return leg of their Inter regional cricket competition in the future as Eastern Region won 3 trophies out of 4, for the SHS and primary level games played at Akwamuman SHS Park in March.

The Coaching Clinic for the JHS boys and girls therefore serves as a boost of skills for Volta to deliver, when the competition comes off.
Some of the pupils who partook in the clinic shared their experiences with Global FM Sports.
While some feel, their expectation of the program has been met as they now see how easy it is to play Cricket, others are optimistic of playing Cricket to the highest level as they pursue their education.
